Places to Visit

Attadale Gardens

These wonderful almost sub-tropical gardens are located 5 minutes’ drive from the cottage. They are open to the public April-October and are part of the 30,000 acre Attadale Estate. The extensive Attadale house dates from 1755 and featured in the TV series 'Hamish Macbeth'.  The Attadale Estate also plays host to the Lochcarron Highland Games which are held on the third Saturday every July - a definite fixture on the summer calendar. http://www.attadalegardens.com/

Eilean Donan Castle

This is an iconic Scottish landmark and will be instantly recognisable to many people having appeared in many films and on television. The castle is situated on a little island in Loch Duich (accessed by a bridge) and is surrounded by superb scenery. Most parts of the castle are accessible and it has its own visitor centre with a tea room, shop and toilets. http://www.eileandonancastle.com/

Plockton

The beautiful village of Plockton is situated in a superb location on a sheltered bay of Loch Carron, surrounded by a ring of hills. It has a very mild climate and benefits from the North Atlantic Drift which allows palm trees to grow. Take a boat trip here to see the seals in the bay. http://plockton.com/

Bealach na Ba Pass / Applecross

The Bealach na Ba (Pass of the Cattle) leads from Kishorn (just west of Lochcarron) to the village of Applecross and is a memorable and spectacular drive. The road rises to a height of 626 m (2,054 ft) with great views during the drive and a good chance of seeing herds of deer. You can visit the child and dog-friendly famous Applecross Inn, recently voted Best Pub Food in Britain. http://www.applecross.uk.com/

Torridon

Torridon is a haven for climbers, photographers and wildlife visitors. The Torridon area is widely acknowledged as having some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the whole of the British Isles - with mountains rising vertically to 3,500 feet from the deep sea lochs - with Beinn Eighe, Beinn Alligin, Liathach and a few 'Munro' summits to mention just a few of its most famous. http://www.visittorridon.co.uk/

Isle of Skye

Skye has numerous attractions including the Talisker Distillery, Edinbane Pottery and Dunvegan Castle. The Skye Bridge is only 30 minutes’ drive from the cottage, however, you can still travel to Skye by ferry from Glenelg during summer using the last hand operated turntable ferry in Britain. On route, why not visit the 2000 year old Glenelg Brochs and the site of Gavin Maxwell’s house at Sandaig (Camusfearna in ‘Ring of Bright Water’) where he raised a number of otters.
