The cottage is an excellent base for tackling the numerous Munros and Corbetts within close proximity. Torridon, Kintail, the North West Highlands and Skye are all within reasonable travelling distance.
Just 5 minutes’ drive from the cottage are the usual starting points for all the Achnashellach Munros including the remote Bidean a Choire Sheasgaich and Lurgh Mhor. Only a little further afield are the starting points for the magnificent Beinn Alligin, Beinn Eighe, Liathach, the Five Sisters and The Saddle. At the end of a hard day, you can return to excellent food and drink in the Strathcarron Hotel just 100 yards away!
Should you need some suggestions to make the most of your hillwalking time whilst staying at the cottage, we would be happy to provide you with some suggestions. Between us, we have completed 3 rounds of Munros and 2 rounds of Corbetts so know the area well! Please feel free to call or email to help plan your hillwalking.
Cycling
Strathcarron is an excellent base for both road biking and trail biking. The greatest challenge locally is the Bealach Beag route which takes in Britain’s longest continuous cycle ascent . Climb the 600 m Bealach na Ba to Applecross and follow the winding coast road to Kenmore and Shieldaig. A round trip of 92 km brings you back to Lochcarron.
Another fantastic route follows the Torridon Circuit. This is 100 km long with relatively gentle climbs on good road surfaces. Leaving Lochcarron, it goes via the A896 to Shieldaig, Torridon and Kinlochewe to Achnasheen. From Achnasheen, there is a fantastic descent back to Strathcarron.
For trail biking, there are numerous routes of varying difficulty through beautiful scenery. These include the Reraig Loop, the Bendronaig Lodge circuit, Coulin Pass and an off-road Torridon Circuit.
Kayaking
There are lots of opportunities for kayaking trips catering for every ability and confidence level. Loch Carron and Loch Kishorn have lovely bays and islands to explore. A little further afield, at Loch Alsh , you can kayak under the Skye Bridge and explore the coastline along to the magnificent Eilean Donan Castle in Loch Duich. The possibilities are endless. Kayaking lessons are available in Applecross....
